Dr. Shamin Masrour

Mentor Bio

Clinical Headache Specialist

Shamin Masrour, D.O. is a clinical headache specialist that works at UT Southwestern. After being born in Iran, Dr. Masrour moved to the states at the age of 10 and by the end of her high school year she decided to go into medicine. With her strong interest in the sciences, Dr. Masrour attended the University of Texas at Dallas for her undergraduate studies and went to medical school at UNT Health Science Center, College of Osteopathic Medicine, from 2008 and graduating in 2012. Dr. Masrour continued her medicinal studies at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School as an Internal medicine intern for her first year and then transferred into a Neurology Residency from 2013 to 2016. Early on, Dr. Masrour knew that headache medicine was the subspeciality she wished to focus on and with a Fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center she finished her studies in 2017.

In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Masrour has also written many medical papers. A year after her fellowship, in 2018, she published a study with other UT Southwestern colleagues that explored the characteristics of Alice in Wonderland syndrome in cohorts with vestibular migraines. Then, in 2019, she published two papers that explored vestibular migraines from its known pathophysiology to possible triggers as well as the cost-benefit analysis of differing types of migraine treatments, respectively.

I asked Dr. Masrour to be my mentor, due to the fact that her experience as a headache specialist will prove to be invaluable to my exploration of neurology this year in ISM. My focus on headache medicine played a major role in this choice as I felt Dr. Masrour could provide me an insight into the thought process of medical professionals in this field and also allow me to learn about the profession straight from one who has already completed their journey into this medical field. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Masrour for taking time out of her busy schedule to meet with me over zoom and answer any questions I may have about her profession and help me with the realization of my final product in ISM.
