This week I interviewed three medical professionals: Ms. Shaina Patel, Dr. Shilpa Chitnis, and Dr. Fayak Kamili. From these sessions with professionals I learned not only about my topic of neurology, but also underlying factors and problems facing the medical field today. One common theme that seemed to prevail in all of my interview was the importance and nastiness of insurance companies as they often scam their patients or even force doctors to give inadequate care to their patients by limiting the amount of tests and treatments. From Dr. Kamili I learnt about the three settings doctors often work in: at the hospital, clinic, or on-call. Dr. Kamili pushed the idea of the importance of always learning and to never stay static in the medical field as its constantly evolving and growing. My interview with Shaina Patel, on the other hand, gave me insight into my original work, as the concept
of immunotherapy could also be applied to the interval therapy treatment of botulinum and Magnesium to produce the best treatment effects for the patient. My final interview with Dr. Chitnis completely focused on the neurological aspect of medicine as I learnt about the 3 main therapies used when dealing with movement disorders: Deep brain stimulation(DBS), Dopamine Injection. and High Frequency Ultrasound. I also further understood botulinum injections as a possible way to stop facial and eye spasms. As I continue to study neurology and Migraine I will research the possible affects dopamine on Migraines and the continued uses of Botulinum.
