Over this past week, I continued to interview medical professionals in order to understand more about the profession and understand the time and sacrifice it takes. However unlike last week, my interviews consisted of professionals only in the field of Neurology and this allowed me to gain a much needed insight into new treatments of neurological disorders and understand the deductive process many neurologists must go through to treat a patient. From my first interview with Dr. Chitnis I was able to find more about the expansive use of botulinum in the field and learn about the 3 main types of treatments regularly used in neurological movement disorders: Deep Brain Stimulation, Dopamine Gel implants, and High Frequency Ultrasound. My next interview with Dr. Masrour, who is also a neurologist, was radically different because she was a Migraine Specialist. From this interview learnt about the possible treatments to Migraines beyond Botox, such as nerve net blockers and possible anti-seizure and anti-depressant medication. This week I was successful in acquiring new knowledge about the treatments of Migraines and understanding the many different pathways within neurology from headache medicine to movement disorders. As I continue to study neurology I will begin to look at anti-seizure/anti-depressants medication to expand my knowledge on how they can affect Migraine pain.
